Her desire to play sports started as a young toddler. Gerina took up golf when she reached the age of 15. Gerina graduated from Goddard High School. In high school she won New Mexico's state golf tournament. In addition to volleyball, she competed on the state level. The year 2003 was the time she enrolled at the University of Texas. During her senior years she took home every single tournament she participated in. In the course of her undergraduate studies she won the titles as Conference USA Female Athlete and Conference USA Individual Player of the year.
